Gerry Baker arrived at Love Street in 1958, from Motherwell after an unsuccessful
spell at Chelsea. He played regularly in the Saints forward line and was to
score in every round of the Scottish Cup that season, culminating in a the third
and clinching goal in the final against Aberdeen.
The following seasons Scottish Cup was to provide Gerry's defining moment in the
stripes. On the 30th of January 1960, Saints destroyed Glasgow University in the
first round, the fifteen-nil score line being Saints record victory. Gerry
helped himself to TEN goals, even though he had to leave the field with twelve
minutes to go because of injury!
After this match it was clear that bigger clubs would be knocking at the door
for his services, and it was no surprise when he left for Manchester City later
that year.
In his time at Love Street he played 71 competitive matches, scoring 67 goals.
He also represented his native USA on sixteen occasions.
