George Stewart joined St.Mirren in
October 1950 from Dundee having been at Dens Park for five seasons after signing
from Buckie Thistle. He made his debut at centre
forward against Motherwell on the 4th November that year. He soon made himself the regular centre and led the line well. His first goal came at Pittodrie in a 1-1 draw on the 6th January 1951. He went onto score six goals before the end of the season making him Saints top scorer. This was a feature of his time at Love
Street; he was top scorer in all four seasons! He was a hard working player, but
never really became a favourite with the fans or the management and his
appearances were inconsistent at times. It is testament to his ability that he
managed to keep his strike rate up even though he was not deemed a regular. During 1951-52 he played in eighteen
matches scoring six again to be top marksman. 1952-53 was his best year at Saints with
eighteen goals from 34 matches. This included a hat-trick against Queen of the
South in a 6-0 victory on the 20th September. 1953-54 was his last in Paisley and he
began with five goals in the first four matches to set him up for fourteen goals
in the season. In total he played in 95 matches scoring
44 times to place him in seventeenth position of the Saints post war scorers
charts. He left Saints during the summer for
Worcester City. He only remained there for a few months before joining
Accrington Stanley. He is reputed to be the greatest player in the history of
Stanley. He played for them for just four seasons but scored 136 goals in 182
appearances making him the top scorer of all time. Unfortunately financial
troubles meant that he was sold to Coventry in 1958 where he netted 23 times in
40 games. He finished his career back with his home town team Buckie after a brief stint at Carlisle where he scored twice in seven games. | ||||||||||||||||||
