Born in Glasgow on 17th March 1956, Frank McGarvey was signed by St Mirren on an S form but was farmed out to Junior club Kilsyth Rangers. His first appearance was in a 5-0 defeat by East Stirling on 26th April 1975. A few months later he hit 4 in a 5-3 win over Reykjavik in a pre-season friendly. During season 76-77 he scored 17 times including 7 in the last 4 games. In the following season he again scored 17 times, in one match he borrowed Alex Beckett's boots and scored a hat-trick.

In May 1979 Frank was transferred to Liverpool for £300,000. In June 1985 Celtic allowed Frank to rejoin St Mirren for £80,000, and he played his part in the Cup winning team of 1987. He was appointed Assistant Player/Manager in April 1988. He was Assistant Player/Manager for Shotts Bon Accord until they were kicked out of Junior football. In total Frank made 387 first team appearances and he scored 125 goals.
His 91 competetive goals puts him on the second rung of the post war scoring charts.
