On 26th June 1979, McDougall joined St Mirren for a fee of £150,000, at
the time a record for a transfer between two Scottish clubs, and he made his
debut on 28th July at Love Street in a 3-3 Anglo-Scottish Cup-tie against
Hibernian. His first goal for Saints came in September in a 3-2 win against
Dundee united, and he followed this up four days later with a double in a 4-2
success against Bolton Wanderers.
Around the turn of the year, Frank scored important goals against Celtic
and Rangers. In February he would sustain a serious leg injury which kept him
out for the rest of the season. It took Frank a little while to regain his
place, although his brilliant diving header in September 1980 put Saints on
the way to a fine 2-0 win over Dundee United.
Very often wearing the No 7 jersey at this stage, McDougall nevertheless
played very much as a central striker. He was in excellent scoring form in the
1981-82 League Cup campaign, with six goals in nine games, including doubles
against both St Johnstone and Forfar. A cartilage operation then kept him out
for two months, but he was back in goal-scoring action in the spring of 1982,
with a run of six goals in eight games, the most important one being the one
against Aberdeen in the Scottish Cup semi-final, although Saints lost in the
replay. For much of his time with St Mirren, McDougall had competed with Doug
Somner, and latterly Frank McAvennie for the role of chief striker. Frank's
most prolific season came in 1983-84. amongst his best efforts of the season
was a 25 yard shot which soared into the Motherwell net in the first game of
1984. In the 1986 close-season, Frank was sold to Aberdeen for £100,000.
Unfortunately a serious spinal injury caused him to retire in 1987.
