His first competitive appearance was against St Johnstone in the league Cup on 15th August 1981. In his league debut he scored twice in a 4-3 victory over Airdrie. He won the February "personality of the month award" in 1982. His first season also included a goal for Scotland U-21's and the winning of The Young Player of the Year award. In season 82-83 Luton Town would tempt him South, this was rejected. Season 83-84 saw Frank score some great goals.
