Edward McBain came from a footballing
family with brothers William and Andrew also playing for Saints during the
1880’s. Edward was by and far the most
successful of the three having made his debut against Broxburn in 1888. He showed enough in that match to earn a
regular place until the end of the season including a place in the team that won
the Renfrewshire Cup in April 1888. During season 1889-90 he represented
Renfrewshire in a match against the East of Scotland which they won 5-3. A centre half of some pace and skill, he
was not renowned as a goal scorer, but he did score one vital goal in a 5-4
victory over Abercorn in the final of the 1890 Paisley Charity cup. When league football started in Scotland
in 1890 Edward was a firm fixture in the Saints line up. He added to his medal collection as a
member of the Paisley Charity Cup winning teams in 1891 and again in 1894, but
his finest honours were caps for both the Scottish League and the full national
team. He won two League caps against the Irish
League in 1893 and again in 1896. His full international cap came in 1894
against Wales in a 5-2 victory at Rugby Park. Edward McBain was to spend around
thirteen years at Love Street and played in 137 league matches.
