Doug Somner joined Saints in 1979 from Partick Thistle and scored in his debut
against Hibs in a 3-3 Anglo Scottish Cup draw. This goal was a mere taster for
what was to come from Doug as he racked up 25 league goals from 32 outings to
finish the season as the Premier Leagues top scorer. Highlights of the season
were a hat-trick against Rangers in a 4-1 win at Love Street and two goals in
the Anglo Scottish Cup final against Bristol City.
The following season, Doug was to create history by becoming St. Mirren's first
European scorer when he netted the equaliser against Elfsborg in Sweden in a 2-1
victory.
Injury was to curtail his appearances and he managed only fourteen starts
logging just two goals. In his time at Love Street, Doug played in 61 league
matches, scoring 32 goals. His total competitive goals was 58, placing him in
twelve position of Saints post-war scoring charts.
