Derek Hamilton joined local club Beith
in 1976, before moving onto Aberdeen in 1978. After five seasons at Pittodrie he
arrived at Love Street in November 1983, making his debut against Hibs at Love
Street. He quickly established himself in the
team playing predominantly at right back during that first season, but showing
that he could easily fill in any of the full back slots. Unfortunately a series of niggling
injuries made him miss most of 1984-85, but he was back the following year and
performing consistently again. By 1986-87 he had switched to left back
and formed a solid partnership with Tommy Wilson. He played in thirty matches
that year. Most memorable were the Scottish Cup games and he played his part in
leading Saints to victory in the final against Dundee United. In total Derek played in over 100 matches for Saints, before being forced to retire in 1988 through injury. | ||||||||||||
