David Crawford began his playing career
with Victoria FC a local junior side that had strong links with St.Mirren. He
played regularly in either full back position for Victoria before being called
up to the St.Mirren squad in 1890. He made his debut against Dumbarton on
the 20th August 1892 an performed well in a side that ended Dumbarton’s
three year unbeaten home record with a 2-1 win. He played in sixteen out of the
eighteen league matches that season and soon gained the attention of the county
selectors who picked him for Renfrewshire on a regular basis. These matches
heightened his reputation and in 1894 he was capped by Scotland against Wales
(24/03) and Northern Ireland (31/03). Unfortunately these performances also
caught the eye of Rangers selectors and in December 1894 he travelled down the
road to Ibrox. Nine seasons at Ibrox saw David win
three championship medals and a further Scotland cap against Wales in 1900. He returned to Saints at the start of season 1903/04 and played inconsistently in the first team. He gradually played his way to becoming a first team regular again over the next couple of seasons and by 1906/7 had been appointed team captain. This improvement in performances also saw him win a Scottish league cap against the English league. During a Scottish Cup tie against Hibernian at Love Street on the 9th March, David sustained a serious injury and was forced to watch the remainder of the season from the sidelines. Unfortunately the injury did not clear up and he was forced to announce his retirement at the end the season. | ||||||||||||
