Israel Campbell Money signed for Saint in 1978 from Dailly Amateurs, giving
up a career in the police to become full time.
He made his debut on 1st August 1978 in a friendly match against Southampton, who
fielded a forward line of Mick Channon, Ted McDougall and Peter Osgood. Campbell
played well and earned the Saints a fine 1-0 victory with some fine saves.
His competetive debut came the following Saturday at Fir Park in an Anglo
Scottish Cup tie. Unfortunately, despite another fine performance from young
Dibble, Saints lost 1-0.
His opportunities in the first team were limited over the following seasons due
to the performances of Billy Thomson, but when Thomson was in dispute with the
club toward the end of the1983/84 season, Campbell grabbed his chance and over
the following eleven seasons played in over 400 matches for St.Mirren. The
highlight of his career was the 1987 Scottish Cup winning team.
A very brave goalkeeper, Campbell had more than his fair share of knocks, and
was carried off the park unconscious on several occasions after making saves at
strikers feet, but he always came back as brave and reliable as before.
Capped at under-21 level on three occasions, Campbell was regularly a part of
the full international set up, but with Alan Rough and then Jim Leighton as
competition was never to gain a full appearance.
He holds two records at Love Street-
He is Saints top appearance holder in European matches, with eight appearances
between 1985 and 1988.
He is also Saints top scoring goalkeeper in the first team with two
penalties, against Cowdenbeath on 2nd December 1992 and Clydebank on 26th
December 1992. He also
scored in a penalty shoot out in a league cup match at Brechin on 20th August 1991, but
his most famous strike was in the penalty shoot-out in the final of the
Singapore Cup in 1987 when he slotted home the fourth penalty in Saints victory.
Campbell left Love Street in 1996 to become Stranraers first full time manager
and guided them to the League Challenge Cup in 1996/97 and the Second Division
Title in 1997/98.
