A YTS signing in 1982, Brian was
loaned out to Pollock United before being recalled in 1985 and making his debut
against Waterford on the 25th July 1985 during a pre season tour of Ireland. His competitive debut came against
Dundee at Dens Park as a substitute. Dens Park was to be a happy hunting
place for Brian as he netted his first goal for Saints there in August 1986 with
a powerful drive from the edge of the box. 1986 also saw him play for the Scotland
U-19 team on a couple of occasions. Later in the season was to be the most
memorable time for him at Love Street when he was part of Saints 1987 Scottish
Cup winning team. It was from Hamilton’s pass that Ian Ferguson netted the
extra time winner. After this victory he travelled to Singapore and played in
all four matches as Saints won the Epson Trophy. 1987-88 saw him miss the start of the
season with a groin injury, before returning to the team and regaining his
consistency which led to several call ups to the Scotland U-21 squads. 88-89 saw him switch between central
defence and midfield, but more importantly will be remembered for a wonder goal
at Tynecastle when he picked the ball up around thirty yards out, strolled past
a couple of defenders before unleashing an unstoppable strike past the keeper.
His performances were a bit inconsistent around this time, but that did not stop
him adding further U-21 caps to his collection. He left for Hibernian in July 1989 for £275,000. He had played 89 matches for Saints with five sub appearances, scoring five goals. | ||||||||||||
