Billy Thomson signed for St Mirren in August 1978 for £40,000. He made his debut against Dumbarton in the League Cup. A month later he played for Scotland U-21's against the USA. The following season he made his full Scotland debut against Billy Bingham's Northern Ireland side. Back on the club front he was in superb form, one noteable performance was against St Etienne in the UEFA Cup. Saves from Rep and Roussey were the most memorable. In between seasons 81-82 and 82-83, Billy Thomson had some fine performances.
Season 1983-84 saw Billy Thomson fined by the club after making derogatory remarks about wages and conditions at Love Street. Then manager Alex Miller said that he wouldn't play again that season. At the time many fans were disappointed, and were only made madder by Thomson's sale to Dundee United in June 1984 for £75,000. He made a total of 317 first team appearances.
