On 26th July 1975, Billy Stark signed for St Mirren. He made his league debut on 30th August 1975 against Queen of the South in a 2-2 draw. A week later he scored his first goal in a 2-2 draw against Morton. In the penultimate league game of season 75-76 he came on against Airdrie with the score at 1-1, a fine display and two goals later, St Mirren had won 3-1. In season 1976-77 Stark scored one of his most important goals when he opened the scoring against Dundee on the day St Mirren won the old 1st Division title.

Seasons 77-78 and 78-79 saw Billy mature in to an exceptionally talented midfield player. By now reckoned to be one of St Mirren's best acquisitions ever, Stark played in every league game of season 1979-80. Season 80-81 was another fine season and season 1981-82 saw Billy score 10 goals. Stark was destined to leave Love Street in the 1983 close-season. In June 1983 Aberdeen paid £70,000 for him. In 1987 he moved to Celtic for £75,000, later he moved to Kilmarnock. He had a spell as the Assistant Manager at Celtic.
