A schoolboy signing, Billy Abercromby signed full forms in 1975. Billy was still under seventeen when Alex Ferguson called him into the St Mirren party to tour the West Indies. He made a number of appearances on that tour and made his home debut in November 1976 in a Renfrewshire Cup match which St Mirren won 3-1 against Viewfield Rovers. His league debut came on 8th March 1977 when St Mirren drew 1-1 at Love Street with St Johnstone. He scored his first goal for the club at Stirling when St Mirren beat Albion 4-1 in an Anglo-Scottish Cup match on 3rd August 1977. Although only 5' 8" tall, Abercromby could hold his own in the air as well as on the ground and he won 7 Scottish Under-21 caps. Billy's committed style of play sometimes led to spots of bother with referees.

Bill Abercromby: was sent of by Referee Louis Thow at Love Street v Motherwell on 29 October 1986 for THREE red card offences. Foul play and two counts of dissent. He was banned for twelve matches and transfer listed by Alex Miller "To give him a fresh start nothing to do with punishment" When Alex Smith took over he got a reprieve and returned to the first team at Easter Road on 10 January 1987 before going on to captain the team to glory in the Cup Final in May. Transferred to Partick Thistle in 1988.
