Signed by St Mirren in season 1963-64, Archie Gemmill made his debut the next season. Unfortunately he missed the first three months of season 65-66 with a leg knock and then he suffered a broken ankle in a reserve match shortly after that. During season 1966-67 Archie Gemmill become the first official substitute in Scottish Football when he replaced Jim Clunie in a League Cup match against Clyde at League Cup match at Shawfield on 13th August 1966.
On Christmas Eve 1966 he scored a superb hat-trick against Ayr United. At the end of season 1966-67 he was sold to Preston North End for £13,000 After a season in which he had finished as top goalscorer with 5 goals. Archie Gemmill will always be remembered for his remarkable goal in the 1978 World Cup Finals against Holland.
