Alistair McLeod

Date of Birth:

Birthplace:

Alistair McLeod (not to be mistaken with the ex-Scotland manager who had a season at Saints in the sixties) joined Saints from Renfrew Juniors in 1970 and made his debut in a 3-3 draw with Hibs at Easter Road on October 3rd.
Highlight of this first season was scoring both goals in a 2-2 draw with Celtic on the final day of the season, but it was not enough to prevent relegation.
The following season Ally was a regular in the side and finished as top scorer with 27 goals, including a hat-trick against Airdrie and four against Arbroath.
Season 1972-73 was to provide Ally with legendary status at Love Street. On 23rd August 1972 second division Saints travelled to Ibrox to take on Rangers in the League Cup. After only four minutes Alfie Conn scored for the home side and a hammering was on the cards, and it was! For Rangers!!!!!! Step forward Mr McLeod. FOUR goals later and the Saints had achieved a remarkable result. No other player has scored four goals in one match against Rangers at Ibrox. Let alone from a second division side!!
Ally was , once again to finish the season as top scorer with 23 goals, but it is for his four goal burst at Ibrox that he will always be remembered.
He left to join Southampton at the end of the season for £40.000.
