Alan Logan

Date of Birth:

22 July 1961

Birthplace:

Glasgow

Alan Logan joined St.Mirren in 1978 from St.Mirren Boys Club.
He began playing in the clubs under-18 team and helped them to victory in tournaments in Furth, Nuremburg and Eastercraigs during this first season. His performances earned a call up to the reserve side where he found the net regularly during season 1978-79 and this continued into 1979-80 and led to a place in the first team squad.

He made his debut as a sub against Partick Thistle in October 1979. Thistle were to play a big part in Alan’s future career! His first start came in the New Years day match against Morton at love Street in 1980. He scored his first top team goal on the 23rd February against Partick Thistle in a 3-0 victory. The highlight of this first season was the final of the Anglo Scottish Cup when Logan netted the third goal in the second leg to cap a fine 5-1 aggregate win.

During the close season he travelled to Finland and Brazil with the squad and enhanced his reputation by scoring both Saints goals in the three match Brazil leg and another in Finland.

He began 1980-81 on the bench and it was from here he was to gain the tag ‘Super-sub’. On the 11th April 1981 with Saints trailing Partick Thistle 0-2 at Love Street, Alan was sent on as a second half sub to try to salvage something from the game. 45 minutes later and Saints were 3-2 winners; Alan had claimed his first senior hat-trick!

Over the next couple of seasons Alan appeared irregularly in the first team, finding it hard to oust such players as Scanlon, McAvennie and McDougall. At the beginning of 1983-84 Alan was ready to mount a serious challenge for a first team place. However a collision with Clydebank keeper Jim Gallagher in a League Cup match saw him sustain a serious knee injury which kept him out of action for seven months.
He made his comeback at Tynecastle on the 24th march 1984, but was well down the striking pecking order by this time. He was on the bench for several more matches toward the end of the season, making his last appearance against Rangers on 28th April. This was to be his last match for Saints as, after playing in the pre-season tour to the Isle of Man he left to join Partick Thistle on 22nd October 1984, in a swap deal involving Kenny McDowall.

In total Logan played in 69 first team matches, scoring 19 goals.
