John McCartney became St.Mirren's first ever manager/secretary in the summer of 1904,following a succesful playing career that began with Cartvale at the age of fourteen. The emphasis in those days was on the secretarial aspect of the job, with the major decisions being made by the directors, but McCartney played his part in guiding Saints to their first Scottish Cup final in 1908. He left to take over at Hearts in 1910, leading them to the final of the Victory Cup in 1919, only to lose to St.Mirren!
