Tom Hendrie arrived at Love Street following successful spells at Berwick Rangers and Alloa, where he won promotion in his first full seasons. He took over a St. Mirren team that was low in morale and commitment, and over the first few months it became apparent that he was capable of building and motivating a team to challenge for honours. After only eighteen months he had transformed the club from mid table mediocrity into first division champions.

Unfortunately, Saints failed to build on this success and were relegated back to the first division after just one season in the top flight. Form in the First Division campaign of 2001-02 was poor and they became embroiled in a relegation fight which Hendrie could do nothing to ease. Rumours of dressing room bust ups with several players and a constant string of excuses for poor performances led to growing unrest at the club.
A poor start to the following season, culminating in a 4-0 reverse against Inverness CT at Love Street, saw Tom 'relieved of his duties' and he left to seek pastures new
