Rikki McFarlane was club physiotherapist when Jim Clunie was manager, and after his departure, took over as 'caretaker' boss but said he was not interested in the job permanently. Player power was to sway his decision in this matter and he took over officially on Boxing Day 1980. He took the club to the Semi-final of the League Cup and Scottish cup in 1981-82, and the Scottish Cup semi again in 1982-83. 1983 also saw him take Saints into European competition again, but in September of that year, Rikki decided to return to his first love, physiotherapy, and resigned.
