Manager Profile

John Coughlin

Date of Birth:

11 April 1963

Birthplace:

New York

John Coughlin arrived at Love Street in December 1998 as assistant to Tom Hendrie.
His playing career had seen him ply his trade in the juniors with Preston Athletic and Newtongrange before moving to the senior ranks with Meadowbank Thistle.
It was here that he met Tom Hendrie and when Hendrie became manager at Berwick in 1993 he took John with him.
A serious cruciate ligament injury forced John to retire from the playing side and became first a coach and then assistant manager at Shielfield.
After winning promotion in 1993-94 the duo moved onto Alloa Athletic and repeated the feat in 1997-98.
It was this record that prompted Saints to appoint them in 1998 and that faith was repaid with the glorious 1999-2000 championship season.
With the departure of Tom Hendrie in September 2002, John Coughlin took over as caretaker manager, before being given the job permanently in December '02.
Unfortunately over the next twelve months John failed to lift the team and after several poor results and performances at the start of season 2003/4 he agreed to step down from the managers job and left the club in November 2003
