Alex Ferguson. Fergie must be the most famous of all ex-Saints bosses, after his success with Aberdeen and Manchester United. He joined St. Mirren from East Stirling in 1974 on the recommendation of outgoing manager Willie Cunningham. Alex began immediately moulding a young, ambitious group of players who took the First Division by storm in 1976-77, securing the Championship, losing just two matches in the process and equalling the record points total of 62. Fergie was surprisingly sacked in 1978 after establishing Saints in the Premier League, and embarked on his trophy laden career at Pittodrie.
