Anglo
Scottish Cup
The
Anglo Scottish Cup was first competed for in 1970 under the guise of the Texaco
Cup, sponsored by the giant petrol company, and involved clubs from Scotland,
England and Northern Ireland.
The
Irish clubs withdrew in 1971-72 due to the unrest in the country and formed the
Texaco Irish cup. Texaco withdrew their sponsorship in 1975 and the ASC was
formed.
St.Mirren
first competed in season 1977-78 and competed for three consecutive seasons,
with some success.
In
1977-78 they reached the final, but were defeated 2-3 by Bristol City over a two
legged final. Revenge, in a small way was achieved the following season when
City were defeated 4-3 on aggregate in the quarter finals. However Saints went
out in the next round to Oldham Athletic who won 4-2 on penalties after a 2-2
draw.
St.Mirren's
finest moment came in 1979-80when they again reached the final and were, again,
paired with Bristol City!
Revenge was sweet!
St.Mirren
were the first and last Scottish team to win the ASC, as in 1981 Scottish clubs
withdrew from the competition after the standard of English clubs entering
declined. In the eleven years of the competition only two other Scottish clubs
appeared in finals, Hearts in 1970-71 and Airdrie in 1971-72.
