League
Challenge Cup
The League Challenge Cup was introduced in 1990-91 as the Centenary Cup,
to celebrate the centenary of the Scottish League. It was to be competed for by
clubs out with the Premier League.
In 1991-92, B&Q sponsored the competition and this continued until 1995-96
when it was unsponsored. It remained Unsponsored until Bells took over for
season 1999-2000.
St.Mirren first competed in season 1992-93 following relegation from the Premier
League,
In season 1993-94 they reached the final, defeating Clyde, Morton, Airdrionians
and Ayr United on route to a clash with Falkirk at Motherwell's Fir Park ground.
This was not a happy occasion,as on a freezing cold, snowy day Saints lost 0-3.
It took until season 2002-03 for Saints to make any more impact on the
competition, when they reached the semi final. This time they disposed of East
Stirling, Clyde and Ross County before being well beaten by Queen of the South
5-3 in the semi final!
Three years later in 2005-06 Saints achieved their finest moment in the
competition when, after eliminating Forfar Athletic, Queen of the South,
Stenhousemuir and Morton, they lined up against Hamilton Academical in the final
at Airdrie United's New Broomfield.
This time after a hard fought match Saints emerged victorious. Simon Lappin and
John Sutton netting in a 2-1 victory!
One other notable fact of Saints participation in the competition is that, in
the first seven years of competition, they played twelve matches but NEVER
had a match at home!
